OD ISSUE

Hi,
My GF has a 93 auto and the thing drops out of OD all the time. But it mainly does it when you let OFF the throttle? It will do it at 45 mph or at 70mph and in between, not good. How does the OD sense when it needs to go in or out? Is there adjustments? Linkage problems? Besides this it shifts fine. To me it feels like maybe some kind of vacuum change is doing it,I don't know how they work tho..... Thanks

Garage
my 92 had the same problem check the speed sensor on the transfer case and ALL the plugs leading to the transmission if there all good pull your tranny pan and check for metal. also you might want to see if the fluid is burnt maybe flush the transmission

The PCM controls the ground on the OD solenoid in the transmission, the inputs are speed control (speedometer), trans temperature (on the front cooling line), crankshaft sensor and the throttle position sensor. Most probable cause TPS, several ways to deal with it for less than $300 for a new one.

Thanks guys.
When you say several ways to deal with it for less than $300 what do you mean? Thanks again

One is replacing the TPS with a 5k linear potentiometer, another is tapping the governor port on the transmission and adding a pressure switch to ground the lead that goes to the PCM, a switch to ground the lead is another.

i would say TPS or transmission fluid temp sensor. My 94 did the same thing, my trans man (along with everyone else) swore up and down it was the TPS, bought it, dropped it in in the parking lot, NO DICE!!! had to sell a used electrical part... complete headache. the temp sensor was bad, along with the sensor to wiring harness connection. i've heard of people hard wiring the trans temp sensor. if that aint it, all you got is to pucker up and get the TPS

Normal failure mode for the temp sensor is 'no OD' but they can go intermittent. Faiure mode for the TPS is electrical 'noise' instead of smooth transition in resistance value.
Poor connections to the sensors are electrical 'noise'.

The 5K linear potentiometer can be plugged in with terminals to the TPS connector and set to a value that lets most PCM modules work normally in using OD, except for the kickdown feature. It also proves the TPS to be either in need of adjustment or defective for less than $10 in parts.

Heres one way to check it.
http://www.dieselbombers.com/dodge-d...ensor-tps.html
Doing the potentiometer yourself.

Or installing a dnrcustoms adjustable pot.

Mine did that and I found it was the speedo sensor leaking trans fluid into it.

Who do you call when the lawmakers ignore the law?
