Estimated Cost for 2wd to 4wd conversion

Just curious if anyone has an idea or has converted a 2wd truck to 4wd and what ones looking at for possible cost. Also possibly swapping an auto trans for a 5spd.

I know waiting to find one is the preferred method, but wheres the fun in learning then?

Thanks guys

You are talking about a lot of work, is there some special reason to do it? Like you dad gave you the truck and he bought it new and it mean a lot to you, or is it just what you want to do?

It will be less expensive to buy a 4X4, if you do your home work and look for what you want you can find one built just the way you want it.

No just a general inquiry. Figured it would be a pretty penny and always looking for exactly the one haha.

I have wanted to build something one off like a 56 Chevy 1 1/2 ton on a second gen frame but that may be more of a project than I have time.

Yeah I'm just noticing mostly 2wd ext cabs and auto transmissions for dually that are really clean but I want the 5spd trans and 4wd on it. Figured it would be alot of work and alot of money changing everything around for it. Figure I'll just wait instead of jumping the gun and diving into a project.

Just a few parts you would need for the $X$ swap.

Engine cross member, front spring hangers, cross member below the raditor, rear spring hanger mount, transmission cross member, lower steering column shaft, steering box adapter plate, rear axle lift blocks.

That just covers the frame parts. Add the front axle, trans & Tcase and drive shaft also. Its cheaper to buy the $X$ the first time or buy a complete donor rig.You get all the parts that way cheaper than buying everything a piece at a time..

What about changing an automatic transmission to a 5 or 6spd manual transmissions and leaving the automatic 4wd hubs?

I have never seen auto locking hubs used on a dana 60. Those were used on dana 44's in gassers.

As far as the swap to a manual. That is all bolt in items. The pedals are easy to install. You need to figure out what trans you want to use. All versions of Dodge diesel stick trans have been swaped into a 1st gen. The trans you pick will determine what you need to do. A getrag is a direct bolt in. A NV4500/NV5600/G56 needs some slight mods to install.

Automatic hubs to me are the ones you dont have to get out of the truck and switch from free to lock at the hub itself before shifting inside the truck.
