air filter change

have a 6bt[1986]cummins in my 84 chevy dualley;;been seeing lots of pics of just a big cone shape open air filters mounted on turbos;;what is pro/cons of this;;any inprovements or bad things doing it this way?as of now i have a big long round air cleaner box[think it is org off a bus]was told this eng came from a bus.it has a 3" opening on the side of it for air to enter it..it is big//ugly and in way of my ac hoses that i'm installing on truck;;thinking of doing the cone air filter..need not to hurt my performance and fuel mileage because i pull a 38 foot race car trailer loaded down;;
what i'm thinking is i have a 4" cowl induction hood scoop on my steel hood but i don't have a hole cut in hood for it to work[let air from scoop into eng compartment;;as now just on hood for looks]thinking if was to put cone air filter on turbo and then cut opening in hood directly above filter under the cowl hood scoop so it would force fresh air[cooler]from under scoop directly into the filter if this would help on performance and MPG?i don't know anything about how to get performance and MPG out of a cummins that's why i'm asking;;if this was a gas engine then i know for sure bring fresh air from outside into air cleaner will help big time on gas engine so using this as a thought for the cummins;;am i headed in right direction?NOTE;;i've got a vane fuel pump and has no intercooler if this matters;;
I NEED TO RELOCATE THE AIR FILTER SYSTEM HAVE NOW AND REPLACE THE FILTER IN IT SO THINKING IF CAN IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND MPG BY DOING THE CONE FILTER AND SCOOP HOLE IDEAL THEN NOW TIME TO DO IT..

If you Google "ISO 5011Duramx Air Filter test report". It will give you a lot of information on the eficency of different filtration systems, it takes very little dust to destroy a diesel engine.
Just a thought!
