higher horsepower driveline issues

so im planning on taking my 93 W350 DRW up to about 400-450hp, will i need any other driveline upgrades other than tranny work? and also, what kind of tranny work do i need exactly for it to withstand the big power increase? my truck is a 3 spd overdrive... is that the 518? sorry for all the questions guys. cheers,

nick

What is the truck going to be doing primarilly? This will help determine the extent of your build needs.

I think that is a 518 but I am not 100% on that. You might want to look into stronger u-joints, aftermarket torque convertor, aftermarket transmission valve body, and maybe a billet input shaft depending on what you want to do with it.

Trans should be a A518, the connector at the rear top on the drivers side of the trans is a 2 wire. If it is a 3 wire the trans has been swapped for a later model.

If you want to boggie up the mountain with a large trailer or pull with it the trans will fall out shortly, might as well take it out and do the late model parts and a super heavy converter. Four or six pinions, extra steels and clutches and high ratio apply arms.

It may be worth it to get a '94-'95 with a lockup converter to get the ponies to hookup.

Going to drag? Most of the same stuff.

Put a temp gage on the transmission, somewhere around 215-250 HP the trans fails to cool the hp loses in the trans so it cooks. If you use it up the coolers are part of the repairs.

The drive line and axle ought to hold over 400 HP but the trans will not. There are several build formula for 400 on a VE pump, just cost 2-3 truck payments on a new truck to have more power on an old truck.

I suspect that to hold the power the trans will need to be upgraded - converter to output shaft. The big names want $4-5k for a trans in a box exchange. The parts count to build my 518 to pull 10k in the mountains comes close to $2k, so I will slow down for now and watch the trans temp.
