Thats a way to test the bulbs for function... But it might clue into multi-function switch problem...

brake light switch on steering column

The oem brake light switch on a dodge cannot be taken out of its bracket on the steering post as it breaks the contacts insidem I found out after two days of chasing out wiring! Napa auto sells one bettere than EOM and cheaper around $10 bucks be careful replacing it as once it clicks into square holder if you try to move it or remove it !! There goes another $10!!

Possible you have a bad turn signal switch.

1990 Dodge 250 5.9 12V 727 auto Bone stock 256,000 miles when the odometer quit working a couple years ago. Needs paint bad, Az. sun baked it off. Afraid to re-paint it, fear it will get stolen and took to Mexico.

Um those first gen trucks have always been known to lose electrical power. it happens a lot. and seening how the wiring in the truck consistes of about 3 wires. you just have to check grounds and shorts.

Make sure you plugged into the correct harness. There are 2 under my dash with the same style plug. Only one of them handles the brake lights.

Haven't figured out what the other one is for yet. Tag on it says "switch", but not sure what switch........
