Oil Pressure

Truck is a 91 with 174,000. When driving oil pressure is fine but when you stop it drops down and light comes on. As soon as you give it a little gas it jumps right up fast. Owner says its done this since it was almost new. Any ideas what would cause this?

1997 Dodge 2500 4x4 auto, 4 inch exhaust, airaide intake, 0 plate, boost elbow, 4k gsk, trans, boost, and pyro gauges, built trans with billet converter, 16 cm exhaust housing.
1991 Dodge W250 4x4 manual, 3200 gsk, 4 inch straight piped, advanced timing 1/8", pump turned up all the way.
1997 F-250 Power Stroke-manual trans, 4" exhaust, TS 6 position chip with PHP Tunes, DIY intake, shimmend regulator.

Is there a way to do a process of elimanation between the two. Im guessing the relief valve would be much easier to fix. Also how hard would the oil pump be to change? Thanks

I have not cleaned the bypass but recall a diagram showing it under the large hex on the oil cooler behind the filter.

The oil pump is behind the front cover that needs to come off to fix the KDP.

First thing would be to check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge - the plug next to the turbo oil line. The action of the gauge would point - picking up rapidly with rpm and going high would be a stuck regulator, just getting off the light would point to a poor pump or other internal leak. There may be a burr that stops the regulator stroke so the pressure rises to normal and regulates.

Checking against another gauge would be the best place to start. Could be a bad sending unit.

Finally got another mechanical gauge to check pressure. Started truck and at idle pressure was 48psi. Let truck warm up and drove around for about 25 min. Wide open pressure read 68 psi and at idle was 22 psi. Whacha yall think?

First is an oil and filter change, make sure the oil is diesel rated.

Second is to pull the pressure regulator in the oil cooler.

The broken number is 15 psi but most will hold 40 at idle and 25 is where I start plans for a cure on my stuff.

If the KDP has not been cured and the pressure regulator is clean and free in the bore I would pull the oil pump and check the clearances.

The other thing on the troubleshooting tree is an air leak on the pickup tube, long term thing so that is far down the list.

The oil and filter change cover a fairly long list of possible problems so a gauge reading after is nice, the pressure bypass relief valve is simple - measure that the piston moves freely full length in the bore. I would guess that that is the highest probability as most regulate at 65 PSI.

My error in english - they are the same. Purpose is to control the oil pressure which would change from temperature and volume. A tight engine may make 300# with a stuck valve and a worn out one may still run with 4#.
