Oil leak

My neighbor has a truck in his driveway with a severe oil leak. The owner took it to a shop and they said something along the lines of the lifter cover leaking. Is there such an animal and does it leak? Where the hell is it and what's the easiest way to change it?

Pin pointing it would be best, clean it all off and run the engine. You can also find dyes to add to the oil and use a black light on it.

Do they mean the valve cover, or the tappet cover on the drivers side of the block? They do exist, and generally the cause of the leak is do to high crankcase pressure and inadequate crank case ventilation. But once they start leaking they need a new seal.

If the oil level is to high and you run it at High RPM it will blow it out some have a vent, and hose off that cover as well. First thing I would do is check the oil pan level, 15 quarts, 14.2 liters, that is the oil pan level, you can drain the oil and with a graduated jug add the old oil back to that amount leave it for 10 minutes and that is the level. You can cut the tube if it is a cane type or remark the stick. Then clean the vent, and hose at the front.
