2000 5.9L idles to high

2000 Dodge 5.9 Cummins Dually

I know this is a very old post, but the closest to my symptoms. The idle is high in gear or out. I am running the Bully Dog Outlook programmer. Programmer was completly removed. The APPS was replaced and voltage checked at the computer. I have tried the APPS resetting, I have tried the hot wire test on the pump. Before I throw thousands into the truck I would like to make sure the parts I replace will fix the problem.

Have you pulled the codes?

Here is how, you turn your ignition on then off as soon at the dash lights up 3 times. The third time you leave the key on and the odometer will read out the codes, I think it goes PCM then ECM or maybe the other way but it takes about a minute or two and will tell you when it is thru. Tell us what the codes are and that will help.

1689 code, I have a code scanner. Athough the code makes me think injecction pump, I am going to have the injectors tested. On another thread that I originally started this post on, there was a discussion of torque converter problems as my engine stalls out when put in forward or reverse. This shouldn't cause the high idle but was curious of there outcome on the torque converter part since my 47re was recently rebuilt but someone was thinking for me and moved my post. any insight on simular trouble would be great.

The Torque Converter problem sounds like the TC is locking up. That can be caused by the person who worked on the transmission.

For the VP44 a 1689 or 1688 code is usually the kiss of death, try changing the fuel filter it may help but not very often.

I thought the TC as well but TC doesn't cause high idle and every tranny guy says it wont stall out the engine or I should say it can't stall out the engine do to the low end torque.
I was pretty sure injection pump but hoped something a little cheaper. I did replace the filter, but as clean as it was I realy didn't need too. Time to go pump shopping.

Get a better transmission shop. The Torque Conver can be locked up on command. You can install a TC lockup button and control it from the drivers seat, so when the TC is lockup it will be like a regular clutch type transmission. If you do not unlock the TC you will kill the engine when you come to a stop. Your automatic will still shift but it will be hard on things.

I had the problem of my truck stalling when putting it into gear before too turns out my stator was cracked and the new converter needed rebuilt. I believe ups dropped it about 200 times before it got to me as the box looked like the drug it behind the truck. But as stated above your trans shop doesn't know what they are talking about. you need to get the trans fixed and by idling too high whats the rpm?
