Transmission Limiting Factors

Does anyone know of any limiting factors with the 47RE transmission or any of the other second generation transmissions in regards to towing. Theres no specific tow weight since this is kind of an open ended question. Are there any good/better upgrades that you can share of personal experience? Thanks guys, looking for view points and experiences before I go dumping money around.

Depends also if you you turn the power up, or the current condition of the trans. I could slip my trans in the '97 I had, at STOCK power.

They are prone to internal leaks, which in turn create lower case pressure which would otherwise help prevent the clutch packs from slipping. You can adjust the line pressure up (at a certain point a resistor is needed in the correct circuit to prevent limp mode). Or, get something like a BD Pressure Loc to bump the pressure at the correct time. If you want to run and exhaust brake, you'll need one anyhow. Because, when your foot is off the go pedal, the line pressure goes down with throttle position. That is what the TV cable and lever is for.

Absolute BARE minimum, would be valvebody upgrades and a tighter torque convertor.

I eventually had to buy a built trans to handle all the power. Had 2 burnt clutch packs and a chipped tooth on the sun gear in the O/D section. Got it from Dave Goerend. Loved it! www.gorend.com

Is transmission slip something you can definitely feel? I know the automatic transmission and the truck are stock, I havent gotten around to adding anything yet.

Thats good to know about the exhaust brake.

Thanks for the input.

It can be hard to tell sometimes, because of the torque converter. But, when the torque converter clutch is locked up, you can sometimes feel a shudder or a shake from it.

I would take the pan off and change the filter and the oil.
Those transmissions are a week point, to get any kind of life you want to be sure it has a clean filter and oil.
