Stock trans new converter

If I keep my stock auto trans. and install a very good after market torque converter how much HP would I be able to achieve without doing any trans work? And If I do trans work, would installing just a new valve body be enough to hold up to 400-500 HP?

2001 24 valve cummins

Still not much more over stock because you need a v/b or shift kit to raise your line pressure and firm up your shifts.

Okay, just seeing other options instead of buying a 4000$ reworked trans. and new converter.
