Shifting problems

A member on my fishing forum is having shifting problems. Any idea?

i've got a 1999 dodge 2500 4x4 with the cummins diesel in it. everything is awesome with the truck except awhile back it developed this annoying problem. when u put it in drive....it takes off in 2nd gear. u can manually pull the shifter down into 1st and it takes off like a champ and then u can shift into drive and it shifts out fine. the motor is soooo strong u can just take off from a dead start with it in 2nd but takes awhile to build up speed and get to moving so when i come to a dead stop, i just pull it down into 1st and take off and shift back into drive and let the tranny do the rest. i know it's not anything bad wrong cause it shifts pulls and runs fine, i've changed the tranny oil and filter but seems like it's a sensor or something. anyone had this trouble or know what it could be without throwin money and parts at it? thanks for any help...Jeff

I have had this happen at 36500 miles and i took it to the dealer and they replaced the transducer and governer switch in the valve body. At about 80,000 miles i had a valve body reprogramming kit installed and the tranny had the same problem. I installed another transducer and governer switch and it didnt work. I talked to the ATS guy at the diesel drags in houston and he said that with the shift kit had doubled my line pressure and it would throw a code of high gov pressure.and i need to install a resister in the tranny harness. It worked perfect and now i dont have any more tranny problems.

97 jeep, 4BT,D60s,ARBs,NV4500,atlas,42 swampers
98 grail 12 valve, quad cab, short bed, 4x4, auto, no mods at all.

That's what I was going to jump to. The wire is actually in the v/b I think. I hacked up my wires trying to get something to work on the outside. I've been trying to figure out what wire and what ohm resistor to put in for a while and have failed. That's a big secret to these transmissions is doubling governer pressure, considering you can do it for free!

The ATS web site has the wiring instructions and print to install the resistor.
I installed mine on the ecm behind the air box. The part was $17.00 through ATS.

97 jeep, 4BT,D60s,ARBs,NV4500,atlas,42 swampers
98 grail 12 valve, quad cab, short bed, 4x4, auto, no mods at all.

For 1996-2002 Dodge
10) Remove the battery cables from the negative terminals on both batteries. Locate the PCM. It is
on the firewall, passenger side, behind the air box.
11) There are three (3) PCM connectors. You will need to tap a wire that runs to the middle white
connector, and a wire that runs to the inside black connector (closest to engine). Unplug these
connectors one at a time so that you can access these wires more easily.
12) We recommend that you perform these wire connections approximately 10” from the connector. If
necessary, carefully cut the wire loom wrapping to access the wires.
13) Find the light green w/ white stripe wire that goes to pin 29 of the middle connector and cut it
about 10” from the plug.
14) Solder the white wire from VBA to the cut end of the light green w/ white stripe wire that runs to the
white PCM plug. Tape or heat-shrink all solder joints.
15) Solder the green wire from VBA to the cut end of the light green w/ white stripe wire that runs into
the wire loom, away from the PCM plug. Tape or heat-shrink all solder joints.
16) Find the black w/ tan stripe wire that goes to pin 32 of the inside connector (closest to engine) and strip
back about a ½” inch of the insulation, approximately 10” from the plug. Do not cut this wire.
17) Solder the black wire from VBA to the black w/tan stripe wire in the wire loom that you just stripped.
Tape or heat-shrink all solder joints.
18) Reassemble wiring harness with black electrical tape. Insert VBA inside of loom.
NOTE: If your valve body has been modified prior to the installation of VBA, go back to the middle
white; inspect the orange wire for the presence of heat shrink and/or a resistor. If a resistor is present, it
must be removed and orange wire soldered back together.
10) Reconnect the negative terminals on both batteries.

Darn I was hoping it was just a resister. And I could just have ya check the ohms...... Looks like its more than that.
