t/c won't unlock

I pulled up to a light this afternoon and noticed that my truck was acting funny, i looked at my pyro and it was creeping up to 800 degrees so i shifted into neutral and the temp came down. The light turned green and i shifted into drive and the truck died, I tried it 5 times and reverse worked so i backed into a lot and put the truck in 4 lo then the truck went foreward. I can drive in 4 lo and shift into 2 hi and everything is fine except that when i stop the pyro temps rise and i have to stand on the brakes to stay stopped. The t/c is not unlocking, is there an electrical problem or did i blow up a sprag or something? no codes no leaks and no warrenty on the t/c

I talked to a tranny shop and they were 99% sure that the t/c is the problem.
I dont mind buying a new t/c but i would be very dissapointed after all that work and that didnt fix it. If it were an electrical prob than a code would flash. I am thinking about suncoast, banks, or ats. ats is a 5 disc and the suncoast is a 3 disc, I would think the 5 disc would be better but i need an opinion on different t/c. The t/c in my truck cost me $600 from power demon in houston and it is a p.o.s. I guess you get what you pay for.

Thats interesting. I wonder if the lock up clutch is still engaged but the converter slips a little bit. Because usually what I have seen when a torque converter stays locked is that the truck starts getting a bad shudder to it then stalls out, and you can't be stopped or even going slow. This usually happens when a lock up switch is used and the driver forgets to unlock the converter. So If you are able to stay stopped without it stalling, that means there is some give in the converter. That may just be because its not a very well made unit though.

As far as ATS 5 disc. IMO the converter has to stay the same thickness, so by increasing the number of disc, yes you do get more surface area, but after a point the disc becomes too thin and I would suspect it is more prone to warping. Sun Coast is decent, Dunrite also makes really nice converter, I'm happy with mine. However, Goerend probably offers one of if not the best on the market, and its backed by a lifetime warranty, so I would highly recommend looking into them, I've never heard anything bad about them.

Another tranny guy said that the lock up solinoid might be stuck, but if it was, there would be a code. He said that it isnt the t/c but he hasnt seen this happen on a dodge. I did look at goerend and i liked there products, if it is the t/c than i will buy theirs.

did you scan the truck for codes? When mine would not lock up it never showed a check engine light but when we scan it they came up.

01 quad cab 4x4, edge drag comp, 4" exhaust, fass 150, 250 ddps, Jefferson State compounds 683hp so vp 11.91. AMSOIL front to rear. now back to stock 95 fummins in the works

I cycled the key and nothing came up. Could there be codes that the key wont pick up?

that I don't know I was actually stuck in the bay with an enclosed trailer and called a friend that used to live in the bay he opens the phone book for my area and gives me directions to drive to a tranny shop. I pull up it doesnt' make sense to him so he grabs his snap on scanner and pulls codes. My truck did this before and I thought I had crap in my lines so I cleaned them out because my cheap code scanner didn't pull anything up. A trans service and my 2 solenoids replaced and all is good. So it never hurts if you can get someone with a good scanner to see what may be going on.

ordered a goerend t/c yesterday, hopefully it will be here thursday. It cost a little over $1400 but i will need to send the core in for $300. He had a bunch of ?s about my truck and what i pull. he said that it will be about 500 to 800 rpm lower stall. We'll see how it works

t/c works great, i like the lower stall, you wouldnt belive the difference it makes. The only thing is that the tranny shifts harder than ever, when it shifts into overdrive it feels like the driveshaft is going to blow up. Is there a way to adjust the shift firmness?
I am very impressed with the T/C and the service.
