HX-40 question

How much power is an HX-40 good to on a 5.9?

We ran one on my buddy's truck for a while and dyno'd 468 with it, but it would get really hot. That was the pdr hotrod40 too.

Really it depends on which generation 5.9 you're talkin about and which hx40 setup you use.

I'm just talking about a standard HX40. Being I'm in the 24 valve forum I'm curious about in a 24 valve. I would like to know the power to which they are able to work well. Not so much what's the most you can get on the ragged edge.

Also how much boost can you typically make with them safely before they start to tear up thrust bearings?

Really it does depend on which hx-40 you have. There is the hx-40 "without a wastegate" and hx40w "with a wastegate", then there are different size exhaust housings which control how "hard" the turbo spools up, then there is the super-40 which has a 60mm compressor wheel and a 16cm wastegated exhaust housing, which in my opinion is the best hx40 and will support up to 475hp. The down side of any hx-40 is that they will not take abuse like an S300 will; I know I know no borg for me cause I do like my holsets

Will depend on what you use the truck for. I had a PDR HX40. Good turbo, but the HTT I have now spools better, cleans up the smoke, and run lower EGTs. Plus, switching turbos (and the only change made between dyno runs), I picked up 53hp and 99 ft/lbs of tq.

The reason I perfer a S300 to a HX40 is the spool faster and have a biger shaft. HX40 have been knowen to break the shaft from getting off the throttle to quick.

I guess I'm just talkign about a standard HX-40. Not one that's been modified with a larter compressor wheel etc. One that's wastegated with say a 16cm housing.

The reason I ask is I got a standard HX-40 a couple months ago that I put on my Powerstroke. On position 4 of 6 on my chip I was making about 35-38 psi of boost (which seems to be all the turbo could muster up) and it did a great job of clearing up the smoke and the thing spooled lightning fast. It's got a 16cm wastegated housing on it. Not sure how much power that setting makes but my lowest setting makes just over 300 and the highest is 500+ with enough air (definitely wouldn't do that with this turbo). I'm assumeing it was making in the 350-375hp range and it wasted the thrust bushings in a hard run from 0 to 90mph. I'm just curious how much power and boost the HX-40s are worth on the 5.9L realizing the 7.3L needs a lot more air so the levels will most likely be lower on it. It seems like it is, or was, a popular upgrade from the stock HY-30. But to how far?
