Hit or miss?

I'm thinking about putting a set of 255/85/16 (in place of the 215's) rubber on the '99 3500. Was wondering if there will be clearance issues with the steering/body or not? I do know I'll need spacers for the rear. Would be close even on the newer 2nd gen rims with a deeper dish to them. I have 235 rubber on the '97, and there is maybe only an 1-1 1/2" clearance between the duals at the rear. I keep them aired up close to max, and haven't had any contact between the tire sidewalls, even loaded.

Figured it would be cheaper than swapping in 3.73 or 3.55 gears, in place of the 4.10's, to lower the cruise RPMs of the engine.

Just thinking out loud here.....

TIA.

Better off changing the gears than the tires.

Then the rotational mass stays the same... But if you change tires you increasing the rotational mass and increasing the rolling resistance. So you'll get the lower RPM's but you not going to gain much in the MPG dept.

I'm currently wanting to get rid of my 265/75 R16 and go to 235/85 R16 to reduce the rotational mass and rolling resistance.

I could see more of an issue with rotational mass with 3.55 gears (along with larger tires), but I have 4.10s. I've yet to actually ever lose mileage on a diesel pickup truck with larger tires. 255's aren't really over kill, and I don't want a lift kit. I've had 255's before, on other trucks with 3.54 gears, and they did fine. Only the gasser lost mileage with them.

Going from 215's to 255's will get me close to the same RPMs as the '97 with 235's and the auto trans.
