Plug or Boost Elbow

I was going to just plug rather than use a boost elbow on the turbo. Much cheaper. Any downside?

Just plugging the line will work. However, it will result in higher boost pressures and push the turbo out of its map. Another common thing to have happen when you plug the line is for the wastegate itself to freeze shut due to a lack of use. Unfreezing them isn't that hard though. The air you are going to be getting above about 32psi starts losing its oxygen density and does you little good, and causes your EGT's to rise. I guess all I'm saying is that the extra boost from the plug isn't gaining you anything. Its not likely that it will be hurting anything either, but if you're turning 2500 RPM and have 40psi boost, you are definitely pushing the limits of your turbo and may likely see shaft failure.

which of the two is the "safer" alternative - I'm just looking for a little more boost - max right now is 19/20 psi

Get a adjustable elbow. That way your waste gate is still working and no over boost.
