There are a couple things to check right off the bat: First off, these trucks have issues with fuel pressure from the stock lift pump. If your grandpas truck still has the stock pump, there is a good chance it is going out and not supplying proper fuel pressure to the injection pump. Under acceleration, as you describe, the pump is expected to push more fuel, and if it simply cannot keep up, well, you get the picture. So for this issue, it would be wise to check the fuel pressure at the VP44 injection pump. The pressure range should be no more than 20 psi at idle, and no less than 10psi under full throttle.
I understand that a pressure gauge hooked up and reading from the pump (i.e. not a permanent gauge) is not exactly going to go on a road test...so when you have the gauge hooked up, have someone rev the motor, bring it up in RPM slowly, and see what the pressure does.
Number two issue: Could be problem with A
ensor. Or as we commonly refer to it here as the APPS. To do a manual reset on this, disconnect both batteries for no less than 30 minutes. After re connecting them, get in the truck, turn the key to "Run" not "Start" and depress the accelerator VERY slowly. Then Ease up on it VERY slowly as well. This should 'reset' the APPS.
How many miles are on the truck, and has either the lift pump or Inj. pump been replaced before?
