24-Valve Current Draw on Start-up Question

I am putting dual battery boxes behind the axle on Chum. I'm trying to determine how much current is drawn during start-up. I want to make sure I have large enough cables to safely carry the current. I don't have a pick-up for my Fluke to measure amperage right now.

Any information would be helpful. Draw in cold weather when grid heater kicks on and draw in normal conditions would be perfect.

Thanks!

If I put this in the wrong place, please let me know.

On Geno's Garage web site it says 450 to 700 amps.

1/0 welding cable will stand that many amps for 20 to 30 seconds. Longer than that you will need 500 mcm.

I would use 2/0 battery cable and solder the conections. "0" resistance and "O" problems, use old heater hose to protect it. Just a thought.

Thanks guys. I have access to a lot of 1/0 Industrial. I've used it before and it bends to form around things well. This 1/0 rated 245A and 2/0 at 283A for chassis wiring. I've been running this thing with one battery for over a year and a half. Maybe I'll finally put my horns on now as well.

I need a good source for used heater hose now. Loom is cheaper than new hose. How about 3/4" garden hose, the good stuff?

Well I save old hose and slide it over the cable before I put the ends on after fitting it and figuring exactly where I want to run it and tie it, I like heater hose especially because if it is in a high heat area it will get a layer of carbon on it that works like a supper insulation. where as the loom will melt out of the way, exposing the cable If you have to buy it you only need it in the high heat areas, and loom the rest. Just a thought!
