5.9 question

well, i just sold my 13.5 's on stock turbo 04.5 cc/sb duramax and i really miss it, i was looking to get a reg cab duramax ( and make it run mid 12's with same options as my cc/sb) a friend of mine owns a used truck dealership and i drove a 2006 reg cab cummins for the first time and i really liked it, 19,xxx miles loaded except for leather and no xm radio ( love this in gm models), i know i can add it as well he is asking $29,900 and i am really debaiting buying it ,but, i found a 2000 cummins with a 100,000 miles on it for $6500 and i am thinking to myself what if i buy the 2000 cummins and add $10,000 with of performance mods with the trans being built i might be heading in a better direction. Is there any motor differences between the 2006 and the 2000 that i should know about? what do you think......

I guess the big question is how much will you be able to spend on the 06. I feel you could build a strong running 2000 with 10K plus the truck.

The 06 is a common rail and usually a better engine than a VP, but with care or a P-pump swap you can make the 24V a strong runner. There are many ways to approch this.

well i can spend the same on performance, i just figured maybe i can save a couple thousand dollars going with the 2000 but i really enjoyed the 2006 , nothing like having a newer truck

I would go with the common rail. Just beef up the tranny, add exhaust, intake and gauges...then buy a smarty. claims 170 hp on level 9. http://www.madselectronics.com/Smarty06.html

no matter what both trucks will need to have the trans built sooner or later. I think the 00 is better for the cost. Build the trans add a ppump and some big injectors and some twins.

The only thing that sucks about CR engines is when you eat the injectors they cost MUCH more than a VP44... As for injector failure on CR engines is rather common unless you beef up the filter system (2 micron).

Its totally within the realm of possibility with either platform. I like my VP truck, there are a lot of people that have hot rodded CR trucks. They are just easier to make fast, because the fuel system is superior to the older VP44. I say go with the VP truck. It wont be hard to make it run mid 13's.

Your CC/SB should have been able to dip into 12's with a good EFI tune, or PPE hot plus 2
