Need some used truck advice

my brother-in-law is looking to upgrade his truck (up from a half-ton cheby). locally he found this truck. he's not the most savy when it comes to vehicles, so he's asking me for advice and to help him look at the truck if it seems worth pursuing.

so, besides the obvious concerns about the condition, what do i need to check out that are specific to the 24v? i am aware of the weak lift pump killing the IP (which is what it sounds like happened to this truck), but are there other 24v concerns that will need to be dealt with? the 24v suffers from the KDP also, right? with the advertised mileage, what would you expect the condition of ball joints, rod ends, and wheel bearings?

what about the transmission; i've read about early '5600's having reliabiilty issues - what were those, how common, and are there remedies?

what would you pay for this truck, with the interior / exterior condition as described and assuming decent mechanical shape for the rest of the truck?

thanks, guys.

Travis

doesn't seem like a bad price. but he does list in the ad he would trade for a dodge diesel 4x4 so whats wrong with this one? I don't know on the trans. Truck is probably due for front end rebuild, clutch, and a good lift pump. Just need to look at it and really see whats there.

01 quad cab 4x4, edge drag comp, 4" exhaust, fass 150, 250 ddps, Jefferson State compounds 683hp so vp 11.91. AMSOIL front to rear. now back to stock 95 fummins in the works

Thats a really good deal imo, unless its all beat to hell...I'd throw him 9k and see if he bites...

No KDP on these trucks...Not sure on any of the early 5600s having trouble, thats the first I've heard of that. with 142,000 if he hasnt had to do any front end work, I'd imagine someone will soon, thats when you upgrade to lifetime greaseable Moogs...

some of the 24v trucks still have the kdp.

i didnt type that first post very well...

they all have it i think, but to be a problem (like the 12v's) is very rare, I havnt heard personally of a truck after 99 doing it...it would not be something I'd worry to much about though, if you have the cover off, then yea maybe do it, but other then that i'd let it be...

The nv5600 remedy of that year was installing the bigger input shaft from the 01-02 HO nv5600. The KDP and 53 block issue could be a concern. I think the price is a little high, however the ETC/DEE optioned out truck is rare. Also if it is heated leather, then it is very uncommon truck and it'd be hard to gauge the price.

If you pass on this truck. Tell him to shoot for a late model 2002. Not only will you not have to worry about the KDP or 53 block. The CAD is no longer a issue as well.

Did you get a bobbed duece from 100 Dollar Man? Pretty sweet rig.

He's shopping by budget, but good to know about the '02's.

Nope - Jim (cavemantrucks) built my bob.
