Bad Injection Pump?

Our 01 cummins is gone now, but before we got rid of it, it would spit out white smoke and make all sorts of popping sounds. It started that it just "ran out of fuel" probably from a clogged fuel filter. Then we drove it home and it died again. 3rd time it started spitting out white smoke and popping.

The funny thing is that, when it's started up first thing in the morning and cold, you can firewall the engine and it will run just fune, no white smoke or popping. When it's at operating temperature, it will start spitting out white smoke and pop like crazy.

Even though our truck is gone now, i just figured i would post so i could learn something new lol.

You need to check 2 things...

1. Fuel pressure
2. Error Codes

The fuel pressure is critical to the life of a VP44 pump being it the only thing that cools and lubes the pump internal parts and the electronics of the pump. Then the error codes would of told you if the pump was bad. But I know if there is white smoke there is 2 problems occuring.

1. Lack of timing (fully retarded) Typically has P0216 error code.
2. Lack of fuel pressure to fire correctly.

But since you dont have the truck any long its really hard to teach with out a good example present...
