Rear Axle Hub Nut?

Hey!

Does anyone have the size of the rear axle hub nut on a 98 Dodge 2500 4x4 Cummins. Chiltons manual doesn't give size and there R&R sucks.

Thanks

yea, and unfortunately when I went to disassemble everything, I didn't know that the shop where I was going to pull it apart didn't have that socket. So the guy helpin me pulled out an air hammer to get the nut off That chewed up the edges of the nut a lil bit. We found out later that some people take a chisel/prybar and jam it between the nut and the hub, then spin the hub counterclockwise to loosen the nut (and put it on the opposite way of course).

How About another test?

Thanks and you were on the money with the 2 9/16 ! What about the torque procedure back on. The book says 120 to 140 ft pounds but there is no way that can be that tight! They must be backed off the proper run load to what? Do ya know ?

I actually didnt use a torque spec when i did mine. I tightened the nut until I could not spin the hub, (this made sure that all the bearings were properly seated, as well as all of the seals. I then slowly loosened the nut until the hub spun freely like the other side.
Hope this helps

When I was rebuilding 2 1/2 ton military axles we would run the nut down tight then back off the distance of one flat of the nut. Then set the locks and jam nut...

Thanks to Micheal and Greg! I Fianally found a Mitchels book that gave the procedure, but either of yours probably would have worked. There instructions were torque to 120 to 140 spining hub, then back off 1/4 of a turn.

So now we all know for future use!

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I've been working alot!
