7.8 Duramax

Just out of curiousity (and this may be in the wrong forum) but has anyone had the opportunity to mess with the 7.8 Duramax? Other than there probably arent as many upgrades for it yet, wouldn't it be a better place to start for lets say a real nice n expensive pulling truck? I'm still learning so if I said something dumb please dont bash. Just curious.

Isn't the 7.8 a straight 6? I don't think anyone has even come out with any chips for it.

The 7.8 is a MD inline 6,I doubt there are many hi performance mods for it.IF someone were to build one up,and give it a lot of fuel and air,Im sure it would quickly tear up the track, and the truck it was in with all that torque

Yeah,it's a strait 6. There was one on Ebay a couple weeks ago I thought about but it's too big for a pickup I think. It had a 7spd Spicer behind it  . It's rated @ 290HP and I think
800+ TQ. With a few Mod's it would run nicely. If it could be purchased in a 5500 4x4 I'd consider one,but it only comes 6500 up.

I wonder if you could use EFI Live on it? I would think it uses the same Class 2 protocols as the 6.6 Dmax.

TS Performance has an MP8 that will work on the 7.8L Somthin like a 30 or 35% increase you might want to check with them.

I read about TS performance boxes. As far as i've read it really doesn't do a whole lot. They tested it on a DT466 (I know, whole other animal) and said that only a very very slight seat-of-the-pants performance feel was added.

You should be able to use efi on it, the ram or flash memory is identical, you would have to write a new sub-program for editing fuel maps and such, becuase they are different. Also there is different integrated protocol in the software due to differences from meium duty trucks, to light duty, as no allison tcm command, because they come with different trannys.

Hey, I just got the 7.8 Duramax turbo in my C6500. Oh yes it has the pulling power. I will know for sure once I get rid of the speed limiter - rev-limiter. I'm still tring to find performance parts or chips for it.

How crazy is it for someone to try to soop-up a C6500 Box Truck.
