First road trip in the 6.4
Picked my ’08 up from Randy Wednesday afternoon and headed out on a road trip yesterday. It’s a SWB CC F350 3.73 auto. Love the new truck.
I drove 700 miles yesterday with most of it on interstate but there were two passes I went over. Mileage at 76MPH was 17.0 calculated and dropped to 15.2 when I was going into a 25MPH headwind for about 300 miles. 16.3MPG overall in some less than optimum conditions. Almost exactly what I got with an unmodified 6.0. I think if you are prudent with the throttle around town the mileage will be about the same as a 6.0. That said, it makes so much more power off idle (which uses fuel) that if you mash it like the 6.0 expecting lag the mileage will suffer. The dash computer was 1.5MPG optimistic. I started the trip with 32 miles on the truck. Maybe MPG will get better but who knows?
Some other reactions:
Everything in the cabin is better. The materials as well as fit and finish. Small things like the turn signal relay don’t sound so cheap and the controls have a better feel.
The transmission is better than ever. They’ve done a very good mapping to the 6.4. It never downshifted on a pass (empty) or hunted.
The front end is much more solid. There is no shudder on rough or rutted roads.
My first impression was that it was quiet and that impression holds. On a long drive I don’t miss the 7.3 with the big exhaust. The truck is pretty much passenger car quiet.
Whatever the ratings, the 6.4 has more usable power than the 6.0. On long grades that I’ve done many times, the 6.0 had to downshift to get some boost and the 6.4 stayed locked in 5th.
The audiophile upgrade is nice to have. It has a DSP feature that lets you profile it to the driver’s seat that gives you great sound at lower levels.
I think I noticed one re-gen cycle. It kicked the idle up to about 900RPM at a traffic light. It’s a non event. I don’t know why everybody is whining about it.
The sales experience with Randy was perfect. No surprises, no BS and good communication. Why can’t it always be this easy?
The truck has zero issues at delivery which hasn’t happened with me for a while. After a long day in it, my confidence that the truck will be solid is high. Because of the lag I always felt like the 6.0 (which I still like) was being pushed or taxed. This feels like some other diesels that seem to run easier which inspires some confidence.
Net, net, I’m happy I bought one and would encourage anyone on the fence to breath easier and give Randy a call.
