The "flame" feature was added as a way to discourage tailgaters but later they thought twice about it had to recall them due to threat of litigation.

Or, Ford thought something fun like exhaust flames would be abused by ordinary citizens.

Sorry, best I can do.

The new chevys and dodges will have the same filter and could have the same failure too?

Back in the 50's, people used to PUT flamers in the tailpipes of their hot rods. Since this is just an EPA mandated feature, run with it. Hell, I was thinking of adding this to my 04 just as an effect. Ford's 08 just beat me too it!
At least NOW I can claim it as a "recall" problem if I get stopped with mine!

A person could have fun with this as well. Put a sign on the fender just above the exhaust pipe that reads, "Caution! Stay at least 10 feet away from vehicle at all times. Vehicle may shoot flames at any time." Then when your buddies ask you about the sign, tell them that you took your truck in for the recall and THAT was the fix!

Seriously, not to bash Ford, but they *should* have seen this one coming. Good luck with the recall.

Of course, but we all know GM & DC are watching this very closely and probably taking steps to help prevent it from happening.
