Drove one today...

Interesting. I went to the local Furd dealer today and they had a cab/chassis sitting there so it was easy to look over the ehxaust system and the DPF. I actually like the exhaust tips after seeing them. I have read about some dislikes on here.

Wow, is it just me or does it seem like there is half the distance from the radiator to the firewall compared to my 2000? I know the grill is out of the way but that dash seems really close when standing in front of it. I had a CTD for a while and I like the grill going up with the hood.

Interior has a bunch of rather "square" angles in it. Kinda "boxy" compared to the rounded interiors of earlier SD's. Comfy seats. I was really disappointed in only two selections in interior color (excluding KR). I am a die-hard grey/dark grey interior guy and really don't like the "tan" or "stone" colors. Quiet! Loved that! Gauges are really small. Boost gauge doesn't move very far although it makes plenty of boost!

I drove a 6-speed since that's what I have now. Seems like the "throw" is shorter than mine? Really tight shifting but I'm sure that would loosen up. The engine seemed confused with my shifting. I really like the low-end power that the twin turbo set-up provides but I swear I could tell excatly which turbo was doing the work and when the load was shifted from one to the other. If I shifted when the turbos were "transitioning" then it made for some interesting RPM's and sounds. Not bad sounds, but the PCM was working hard to keep things in line. I'm sure this is not an issue with the automatic trans.

Power, honestly I was impressed with the low-end but from mid to top (I only went to 3K RPM's) it seemed to move out just like my chipped 7.3L in sig. No more, no less...very much the same which is just fine for me but also gives me very little reason to change. Plus they didn't have a red one, .

The tailgate thing is cool, more so for the wife.

Not a bad effort and I like it a bunch more than the 6.0's I have been around. The dealer himself (owner of the dealership) said that the 6.0 gave Furd a "black eye" but he believes they are headed in a better direction with this 6.4. Good Stuff.

Very nice to get a review on a *real* tranny

How quick was it off the line startin' from second or third gear?

If you get the FX4 package, you can get black cloth/leather. Im glad that the 6 speed is nice. Glad you like the test drive as well.

It felt like it didn't matter what gear you started in with the almost instant power. Second was no problem, I imagine third you would have to ride the clutch a bit but it would work too. I would like to test drive a 6.4L and manual transmission while towing about 8K. I'm guessing it would move right out with ease.

Thats good to know about the black interior because the other two options are a deal killer IMO. Just my opinion...

The six speed is nice, but of course, I am biased! :

Yeah...I like the interior of the FX4..but the mismatched gauges in the FX4 kills that deal. Regardless...I would get a 6 speed as well..and its awesome that you can take off in second gear without problems..because I heard that on a 6.0L, you would stall it if you tried the same thing.

Similar observations when I drove the F450. I bought it and so far (300 miles) it is great. Getting 13-15mpg in town and 12-13 at 70 MPH on highway. Hoping for 10MPG when pulling my trailer. My old 2000 F250 V10 was too weak to pull my 28ft trailer in the hills, only pulling about 8,000 lbs. This F450 is over kill, but one never knows what they hook up to in the future. Plus the price of fuel being $.15 less will help. The F250 needed premiun to keep it from pinging in the hills so the delta was more like $.30 per gallon.
