Smoking

question for you guru's.

Truck has been sitting for about a week. Temperature this morning was 38 degrees. Left for the gym. drove about a mile or two and it began blowing white smoke. that lasted about a mile then stopped. Drove another 8 miles with no smoke. Left the gym 2 hours later. temperature was now 44 degrees. same thing. drove about a mile and it blew white smoke for about a mile then stopped for the last 8 miles. it was smoking while i was cruising, not excelerating. i parked it until i hear some thoughts from some guru's.

any ideas as to what's up?

that certainly makes sense. thanks. :thanks:

this morning on the way out to the gym, i took the dog out and started the truck to let it warm up a bit before pulling out. when i did leave, i saw white smoke (condensation) while idling in the driveway.

Your truck was probably in regen. The cycle kicked on when the exhust was still cold and the diesel pumped into the exhaust didn't burn so it came out as white smoke. After a mile the temp got warm enough to regen properly. If you only drove 10 miles the regen was probably not able to complete, so it started again when you left and you got white smoke from the unburned diesel.

The reason that it smoked at cruise is because while stoped or at low speeds the regen is temporarly shut off as a saftey feature so the truck doesn't take off, so after getting back up to speed the cycle kicks back on and more smoke comes out if the exhaust is cold.

I have had a problem with the smoking for some time. It use to be a problem with smoke in the cab but I have had both down pipes replaced and now it just blows smoke out the exhaust. Today it was cold but the engine was up to temp and I felt the engine go into regen and when I was pulling away from the stop light smoke again. This has occured in both cold and warm ambient air temperatures. Looks like the insect fogging truck when this happens. Any ideas?

SouthTexas hit the nail on the head... It went into regen a little early and then DPF was not hot enough to ignite the diesel fuel, there for all that raw diesel came out un ignited, or as white smoke!
