Quick Oil Question....

I need to change my oil here soon...

I went to Walmart... I looked at the Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck 5w-40 and it wasnt CJ4 certified... so i went a little farther down the row and saw Shell Rotella 15w-40 that WAS CJ4 certified...

Now my question... Is the Shell Oil any good? and is 15w-40 correct weight?
They had a case of 3 gallons of Shell Rotella 15w-40 for $26!!!

Let me know guys, the sooner the better. Thanks!

It Must Be Cj4. Brand Is Not As Significant. All Shell, Chevron, And Mobil Etc Will Be Close. There Are Good Designer Oils Available Which Will Do Better.

I've been using Shell Rotella 15W40 in my diesels since 1999. Last year I started using AMSOIL synthetic 15W40. Last change I used AMOIL 5W40.

ok so 15w40 is a good choice then? I am not a fan of amsoil and don't want to get into that discussion...

I mean is there a big diff between 5w40 and 15w40????

15w-40 is fine its the same weight oil that comes in the truck ! the only difference between the 15w-40 and 5w-40 is that the 5w-40 gives broader operating temp range so it handles cold temp start ups better. Why did you only buy 3 gallons ? 15 quarts is the recommend oil amount which would require a 4 gallon purchase minus 1 quart ! I also run the amsoil 5w-40 oil but If I was to choose another I would run the mobil delvac 1 which can be also found at walmart. I personnely don't like shell anything I have no real basis on why except ther fuel makes my gas burners run like crap, but I never heard any one speak bad about Mobil products.

Well I didnt get the Rotella 15w-40 cause i live in a colder climate...

My truck has 5500 miles on it now and i got the first oil changed at 2500 miles (the free one at the dealer)... most of those 3000 miles were highway miles so i am debating on whether to wait to change the oil a little longer.... I know it says 5k miles but i am so used to changing the oil at 3k miles....

what yall think?

If its highway miles I say the oil probably still clean but I pulled my first oil change at 2500 and went to synthetic I did my second oil change at 5000 and wow that [email protected] was dirty, smelly, and looked thick. I sending the oil sample off for analysis we'll see how it comes back.

I also added the fs2500 external oil filter and new oil and wow what a difference feels like I gained some power back !

I think that a superior synthetic like mobil or amsoil is going to be better for overall engine protection over a conventional oil. The thing that kills engine oil life is dirt so the cleaner its kept by using added methods of filtration the longer the oil will last, but no conventional oil will every out last a synthetic b/c its refined way past a conventional oil and its designed to handle heat and reduce wear.
