DPF Regen Rumor

I heard through the grape vine that some of the trucks that are experiencing constant or multiple regens per day is a result of a back pressure sensor malfunction or possibly due to an exhaust leak between the two turbos. A fella I know was speaking to the service manager at the dealership where he bought the truck and that is what the service manager had told him.

I just thought I'd mention it incase no one else has heard of this or perhaps someone else has heard of this and can confirm this.

my truck seens to regen pretty often. I understand it will due to towing, but even when i'm not it regens often. i also was thinking there is a air/turbo leak since i hear a lot of blow off when i'm driving it. oh yeah, and a big 10.4mpg!

A malfunctioning sensor is possible. The sensor is about the size of a regular 20Amp relay and is just made of plastic. It's for about a 1/2" long plastic nipple what connects to some high temp hose then the port between the DPF and Cat. The hose is only 2" long but the part can be broken easily. Something knocked mine off a week ago and I had to replace it, these goes another $100. I knew right when it happened because my SCT displays the DPF pressure and it dropped to 0. But if that did happen you should get a CEL and a code, it took about 2 hours of driving down the highway for mine to throw a code.

South Tx Diesel,
Won't your dealership pay for repairs like that?

Because it happened when I was driving on my ranch. Must have been a stick or something. It was just $100 and the guy gave me a discount, no big deal. Plus if I would have tried to warranty it I got paperwork and waiting time etc. They ordered the part for me, got it in 2 hours, and installed it myself in 10 min.

Makes sense man. I forgot also that you said you live a long way from the dealership.

I've put about 2500 miles on my truck since I last towed and seems to regen often. However, in preparation for easter, I took my trailer in for some service work. On the way home, about 15 miles, I intentionally worked the truck really hard to try to get it hot. Seems it did something since it hasn't regened for a few days now.

It really should regen less often when towing, since the exhaust temps are generally higher when you tow so there should be less fugitive emissions for the DPF to try and filter out.
