Maybe he had one of the bad injectors they are trying to fix with the recall. The recall stated that the affected injectors would leak and put fuel in the oil, but maybe they might do more than that

One of my firend 08 had one injector stick open and it blew a hole about the size of a quarter in his piston. But the truck kept on running, in fact he drove it all the way to the dealer for a new engine.

Yep, that's one HUGE reason Ford/Navistar waited so long to use DCR - when an injector fails you fail the engine. ALL diesel common rail fuel systems suffer from this possible fate.

Cause: DIRT in the fuel system.

There is no such thing as "clean enough" or "careful enough" when working with an open DCR fuel system, like filter service.
