Deutz F5L912

I think this is the appropriate place to post this. I am new to the site.

I am a Ford guy, most particularly the intercooled 7.3L. I put 100K miles on a 96 powerstroke, and currently drive a 99 powerstroke. I do all my own maintenance and repairs so I know a little about diesels.

For years I have wanted to get a 70's crew cab and put in a 7.3L. Well I just bought a 1975 Crew and it has a 1981 Deutz F5L912. I want this truck to be a dependable enjoyable vehicle. I like speed and power but Im not worried about being the fastest guy in the county. So the question is, is anybody here familiar with these engines? Do I keep the Deutz? It does run great. Are there turbo kits for these engines and what issues will a turbo bring? Any other general info or things to watch for on these engines will be appreciated.

I will try to post what I learn on this engine and truck in the coming weeks. I can hardly wait to start digging into what I bought. The first thing I need to do is give the under side a serious steam bath.

I had some equipment with F4L912's and found them to be mostly trouble free motors. They were both turbocharged.

So here is where Im at with this truck. I have got it to a drivable condition now. Cleaned 15 years of grease and crud off the underside. Adjusted the valves, they weren't too far off. New throw out bearing. Removed, cleaned and reinstalled the injectors, with new washers. New rear pinion and ring gear. New brake master cylinder. New tires.

I have decided to keep the Deutz for now as overall it runs great. Im planning to add a turbo, limited to 10 PSI, and adding a Ranger Torque Splitter, to get better freeway speeds. Right now top cruising speed is about 65 MPH.

The engine starts instantly and runs smooth. But when I accelerate hard it blows black smoke. Lots. I know some people think this is cool but to me its embarrassing. Im thinking the fuel pump or governor need adjusting. The fuel pump is a Bosch PES5A. and the governor is a Bosch RQV300. Does anybody know what the starting points are for adjustments are and then how to adjust from there? Or do I have some other issue, worn injectors, bad pump or bad governor? Or maybe the pump is out of time? This has got me stumped. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
