81 Diesel Rabbit?

Does anyone know anything about the 81 diesel rabbit? I found one for $500.00 from a local farmer. I thought I heard the early VW's had some problems. Anybody ever own one? Anything would be appreciated. This would be a great test car for biodiesel (cheap price) after changing out the fuel lines. But I don't want to be sticking a bunch of money into to it. Thanks.

I have a 1991 VW with the 1.6L N/A and it rocks. Just be advised that it may need glow plugs and/or relay. I bought my car and went through it changing the fluids, etc. and greased it. They are great cars, not the quickest off the line, but overall not too shabby (I didn't care to have it be a rocket). I just turned the Injection Pump up on mine and may have to turn it down. Overall I love this thing. Chris

What kind of mileage do you get?

My best so far with the winter blend and a lot of warm up time and some highway driving was 33.7 MPG. I have messed with the pump and did a lot of hard accelerations as well as throttle snaps and still got 29 MPG. If I babied it more and did more highway runs it would be better. I like the smoke, however if my MPG tank I will bring it back down. Chris

I just called the guy and I'm going to check it out at 6:30 tonight. He says it runs good but starts hard. It came from Arizona three years ago. 143k on the clock. A new starter and alternator about two years ago. How bad can it be for $500? I'll keep ya posted!

Jponder, I'd make a side bet with ya. 50+mpg with MY fully adjustable throttle control. That would be right up there with my wife's TDI Golf!

If I win you sign over the patent to your throttle control. If I lose you get mine.

But I haven't told you about the JATO rocket assisted mpg improver package I've been working on. I'll post some pics soon.

Well, I checked it out. Its really rough. I've bought and sold pretty many cars in my life but never been this misled. What he didn't tell me was that it was totally beat to ****.

The drivers door doesn't come close to shutting. As in completely sprung. The passenger door didn't open. The hood wasn't attached due to it being ripped off. Probably from not being latched while at road speed. The one tail light didn't work because it was bashed in at some point by something really hard and nonmovable.

The rest of the body panels didn't have much rust but had no shape that resembled straight. The interior had enough bird and cow crap to make zoo keeper cry. :barf: The dash board and instrument cluster well......what dash board?

Completely trashed. I counted six bald tires stuffed into the back seat.

As I pulled up to the farm. Which was in no man's land. I got the feeling my truck might not be there if I let it out of my sight so I pulled the keys. I instantly thought of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I didn't even tell anyone where I was going. There were abandoned cars and trucks all over.

I never even saw the guy selling it but the woman who answered the door at the house told the key was probably in it so I could just take it for a ride. I opted not to.

I would only buy this thing as a drivetrain donor if I found a descent body. So the hunt is on. I don't think this car is going anywhere. But I would be a little disappointed if I lost out on the drivetrain. I'm gunna keep looking. Thanks for help guys.

Well that stinks. I hate when people are misleading with things. I hope you you come across something someday. Chris
