Oil for the VW Pump-Duece Motors

In reading, and learing what the accronyms they use over there... But, It seems that the PD motors need a special oil... 505.1... So that means shell rotella syn is out? Are you guys buying it from the dealer, or what are the other options?

As I recall Brian, that is captive oil to VW..Made by castrol, I think??
Local guy has been using Extreme blue from valvoline with no ill results...but, in a brand new one, you might want to stick with the factory recommendation..

I believe its nothing more than a marketing scam between VW and Castrol. I have 10K on Mobil1 SUV at the moment that is going in for analysis.

Like anything 'recommended' I'm sure you simply send in product and a 6-figure check. I could have my clears and primers recommended by the Big-3 for $400,000 per but the payoff isn't there. The recommendation only carries weight in 5% of the dealers body shops.

My argument with the TDI telle-tubbies has been there is no way in 2005 that VW has produced a motor that only Castrol (in the US) can lubricate. There is no question in my mind that a quality synthetic like Mobil 1 or Amsoil can't lubricate my Hitlerwagen.

IN reading the tubbie site, it did say amsoil made a oil that was in specs.... but...

I was unsure what a A5 pd mkV 4ag vag bav nic qrv hig meg b5fqrst meant while you sqed tv nrck6, but it was ok as long as the brv and crv were not in alignment...... It makes for interesting reading over there...

Those quantum physic geeks and their love of acronyms just kill me. My guess is they feel the more acronyms they know the smarter they are perceived.

One more reason why I don't fit their mold.

Thats about the same reading i have seen everywhere.......

I was wrong, amsoil does not make a 505.1 and recomends that none of thier oils be used in the PD motor... I don't knw whats in the 505.1 oil that is so special, but I am going to use the castrol 505.1 and be done with it until something better comes along that is approved...

FYI Supposedly Jim Ellis dropped Castrol years ago due to TDI motor failures right around the 100K mark.

I heard this from a former mechanic that worked there that I sell some refinishing things to. He swears up and down he would not put Castrol in a VW TDI motor from his experience as a mechanic. The only thing that started this conversation was me telling him I bought a PD Passat and that I thought this 505.01 was BS in a major way.

My dad sold oil in the mid 80's and he gets 200-275K miles out of his Land Rover Discoveries with Mobil 1 bumper to bumper and you can't tell me a TDI isn't going to last longer than a Buick aluminum block bored-out V-6 from the 60's.

I have 11 or 12K on my Mobil 1 SUV with 18 1/4 mile passes at TS in BG and I'm only a 1/2 quart down. I'm going to drain it and pull a sample this weekend because I leave for Ft Lauderdale Tuesday.

Oh, BTW the way dad knows its time to change the oil in all of his Rover's is when he's a 1/2 quart low which is roughly 10K-12K for him depending on terrain. He has never purchased an oil analysis in his life and I sent him a Blackstone kit 9 months ago because I wanted to see what his motor looked like. He said what do you think it looks like if it only burns a 1/2 quart every 10-12K? I have a funny feeling dad is right again...... This is a 01 Disco II with 275K on it today.

He just bought a new Sequoia and the Rover is still sitting in the driveway so if I have to personally extract some the oil myself I will because I want to know what 270K+ of Mobil 1 does to a half-*** motor like that bored-out 256 that's now a 4.0.

To give you an example of how he maintains a ride the TOY was delivered to his driveway @ 11:30PM Wednesday, he drove it to the ATL airport Thursday and then returned home tonight. I'll give you one guess of whats going to happen to every factory lubricant in that TOY this weekend....

Keep this in mind Phil.....50% or MORE of the VW dealers have no fugging clue the PD takes 505.01 and don't even use it!

VW HAS NOT BUILT A MOTOR MOBIL 1 OR AMSOIL OR THE EQUIVALENT CAN'T LUBRICATE!

I don't care what the telletubbies tell you! Keep in mind these are the same OCD geeks that use VW leather cleaner and window cleaner because the manual says to.
