New guy in

Been tryin' to post for a couple of days. Hope this isn't redundant.

In trying to keep up with three diesels, 03 Dogde Cummins; 04 VW Passat; and 05 VW Jetta, I'm doin' o.k. on the general oil/fuel filter changes and related maintenance, but the other day my wife was about 300 miles from home and the darn 04 Passat "emissions" code (icon of an engine block accoding to her description and my reading of the owner's manual). Little dab of explanation was something about "poor quality emissions".

Can anyone give me any idea if that's something fairly common and how to avoid it for future reference. I've had quit a few diesels back in the 70's and 80's and am not used to such finnicky behavior. Hope the current generation of diesels (common rail, pompadouce, etc) isn't gonna be a heartbreak.

Thanks for any insights,
