OK got it!!!

Got my rabbit just now. It's clean, real clean. Cool to drive a nice simple piece of equiptment. Rough but effective. Get my registration maybe Friday and then it's on. I'll start the calculations after that. So far got the Cummins in the Dodge. Wanted the engine but the body turns out to be ok. Has proven real reliable so far. Been to Denver, Tucsan, Vegas. All from the Grand Canyon. 24mpg on highway on an 8500lb flatbed truck. Looking forward to this VDub. Next will be a conversion on my girlfriends Toyota flatbed 4x4.

I drove a VW Dasher Diesel Wagon for 19 years and I almost wish I had it back. I sold it after buying my 2001 Dodge-Cummins powered. It was a 1980 4spd with a 50hp 1.5 diesel. I wore out the 1.5 and installed a new 1.6 N/A engine. The thing always needed a 5th gear for highway. Since the engine mounted conventionally and not transverse like the Rabbit, I had a time finding a 5spd trans for it. I did some studying and found out that an Audi 1982 4000S diesel 5spd would fit AND have the right gear ratios. That car was SWEET after that conversion. The car new got 32 to 35mpg with the 1.5. When I put the 1.6 in, it got about 36-38mpg. After the 5spd, It would get as good as 44mpg.

I have a friend that is going to hook me up with a 5sp. from a jetta. He also gav me a contact for a vw guy who supposedly eats and breathes vw's in this era. Looking forward to having his advise. Im vw from the start but this is all new to me. I'm air cooled. So far I've take it to town and filled it not been back since. My rough estimate from what I put in it at the house with transported fuel is 50mpg. We'll see what it is real life with warm ups and daily driving coupled with highway to get fuel. Will post again soon. Stil around half a tank.
