Swapping a Turbodiesel into a Land Rover

For years I've wanted to put a diesel in my 64 Land Rover, but I haven't liked my choices.

Now that newer euro diesels are working their way into junkyards I am trying to get more info on what to go with/what will work.

Mainly I am thinking the Italian built 2.7L CRD inline 5 from Jeep, or the
VW Tdi.

Obviously a big question is, what will fit? Equally important is, could I get it to run? I would be mating the motor to a GM/New Venture gearbox and Rover transfer case.

From what I understand some of these new diesels will not run right unless they're mated to the stock transmission, and the ECU needs all the components to talk to each other constantly.

And the amount of wiring is pretty daunting, regardless.

Who knows about this stuff? Any factory techs on this board?

IF you can bring yourself to lower your standards a smidge and go with a good 'ol mechanically-injected, naturally-aspirated Mercedes OM616, than this is the guy you need to talk to: www.seriestrek.com

Ive heard of GM 6.2s and 6.5s (love 'em or hate 'em) being swapped in over in Europe. They are cheap and easy to find and no electronics hassle.

You know you live in a Country run by idiots if....
