Mercedes 300D

Well I am not sure what I am getting myself into, in the next few days I am going to be buying a mercedes 300D, I am not sure of the year, i was told its an 83 but it doesn't have the turbo diesel emblem on the trunk as the other 83 300D do. Ideas? It has been sitting any where from 3-7yrs. I am not sure how to go about getting it started, I haven't had to deal with starting a diesel that has been sitting for that long. Help on that would be great? I do know the car is in like mint condition, i have never seen it driven more then around the block. I am not sure about how many miles are on it but it can't be over 75,000. Another thing is when I get the car it has a horrible faded paint job, not sure on how to bring the glow back. I will let you all know when i get it and post photos. I am getting the car for $300. to let you all know.

I will differently post pictures when I get it, just waiting for that darn mail man to bring my check tomorrow. I am hoping she will turn it over to me asap, she wanted to take me with her to transfer the car out of her fathers name and into mine.

ok I am waitng for the lady to come home and fill the papers out. I am curious on the door frame the date of mfg is 1983 but on the radiator support says 1970. the vin is the same. What gives??? this is a stick with the none turbo engine. but if the car is a 300d they only made 300d from 75-85. what gives???

Pop the hood.... is it a 4 or a 5 cylinder?

4 cylinder would be a 240D

The W123 300D was made from 76 to 85. The first 300D turbos were in 1982.

Here is mine:

No 300D turbos were sold here in the us with a manual trans. There have been a few Euro Turbo 300D's that have been brought over throughout the years that have manual transmissions.

There were other 300D's after 1985 but those were the W124 chassis. Those looked like this:

Hey are these cars more trouble than they are worth? I read into the Mercedes forums and read how much trouble any Benz is?

The 1970 is the GVWR weight.... 1970kg or 4334lbs. The badge shows that this is a 123.130 chassis which means it is a 1976 to 1981 car.

I'd say change the glow plugs and make sure that the relay is providing voltage. Check the fuse by completely removing it. it can have a hairline crack you won't see until you pull it out and it comes apart in your hands. Glow plugs are cheap you can get them at Napa for about $60 for the whole set.

As far as getting it started I would drain the tank completely and put all new fuel in. I would pull both the return line and the feed line and blow air through the return line until you get good diesel coming through the feed line. Hook everything back up and then use the hand prime pump to pump the fuel up in to the injection pump. That should make sure that you have good fuel, no air, and with your glow plugs replaced it should start. (unless the valves are really far out of adjustment, which is unlikely). Keep in mind you do have to adjust the valves about every 15,000 miles per Mercedes maintenance requirements.

As far as trouble. Keep in mind that the NEWEST W123 Mercedes is 23 years old. There are some finiky things here and there like the vacuum systems and auto climate controls in some cars. But for the most part you are dealing with an all mechanical engine that can easily be worked on. Front ends are in need of rebuilding on a lot of these, but tell me what car with 250,000+ miles ISN'T gonna need a front end rebuild.

thanks, i will putt the fuse and see if it falls apart or not, it had 12v on both sides when i checked. I will try to get the tank drained but might not be that easy. I am not sure if i can even get the fuel door open, the vacuum system is messed up, the rear doors won't even unlock.
