TDI question

I'm in the market for a vw tdi for commuting to work and i really don't want to spend more than about $8k for it. That puts me in the about the 98-2002 year model price range with 100-150k mile range. How many miles will these little engine typically last without any major work and how many miles would you be comfortable buying one with? Is a Jetta or a Beetle more comfortable to drive? I'm 6'3" and i'm a little cramped when i ride in my friends jetta.

I have a 2006 jetta tdi and love the hell out of it. I am 6'3" 350 lbs. still fit but only in the front :hehe . It does not have the room my superduty has but when I can drive two weeks on a tank of fuel, it makes up for it. I have never owned an older one but I do hear about the timeing belt neading to be replaced. I will do mine aroung 60k just to be sure. I think you can;t go wrong as long as you look over the car and do some research on the car. Hope this helps,

Lonnie

Last thing I read was that VW claims 300,000 miles on the bottom end. I have seen some high milage diesels and even my gas car has 300K on the bottom end, the key is good maintence, thats what I would look for if I were buying a high mile diesel , a history of consistant maintenance.

Ok I want a 5spd because of the better mileage and that's all i've ever owned but if i come across a good deal on an auto what is the mileage difference going to be, cosidering about 80% highway. And are the auto trannies pretty good as long as they're taken care of?

I think the newer autos are okay, my auto in my 99 gasser has 170000 and still going. The milage will probably be in the high 30s low 40s, but it could be different. I think the auto will be okay as long as you dont go bumping the horsepower up.

Sorry on my speculation of the mileage, just going of of what I had heard on a vw forum a while back. Does your jetta have the 5spd auto in it, and what kind of rpms are you running at say 75mph?

I have the 6 speed auto trans (tiptronic). I dont know for sure what rpm i'm at when doing 75 but I will tell you tonight. I will look at it on the way home if I even get to do 75mph in traffic

Thanks, I was wandring what tranny you had. My 99 gasser has the 4spd auto and runs around 3600rpm at 75, I think this accounts for some of the lower fuel economy of the MK4 diesels autos by having just the 4spd auto.
