1980's BMW Diesel

So who knows anything about these? I am wanting a diesel commuter car and have a line on a '85 524TD with 110k miles. It smokes and the owner says it needs "injector timing" performed... Anyone?

About the only thing I know for sure on the 524TD is that it has a VE pump like what was in the 1st gen Dodge Dummins trucks.

When you say it smokes, what color and does it run poorly with this smoke?
I drove a friend of mines 524TD and it was fast. It also handled good. Yes it does have a Bosch VE pump that is belt driven. Not the best way in my book to drive an inj pump. It is a fuel lubed and cooled type pump. I had a 1980 VW Dasher diesel wagon that used the same type pump but it wasn't turbo'd. The pump was driven off of the timing belt. The pump shaft is just riding in the aluminum bore of the pump case. They do wear but as I did, I had it rebuilt and they put in bronze bushings in the housing. The BMW shouldn't have the belt tension on it that the VW used as the belt only drives the pump.
I would check out the car well before buying it. Remember though that that car, to my knowledge, wasn't really imported to the states. That could make replacement parts either hard to get and/or expensive.
