1999 Jetta GL TDI any issues to worry about?

I'm looking at a 1999 Jetta GL TDI 5spd manual with 92000 miles & was wondering if there are any issues/quirks I need to know about. The guy wants $8500 for the car, but KBB says at best it's worth less than $6000. I haven't spoken with the seller yet, just trying to do some homework.

www.tdiclub.com

This is the website I go to for info on my Jetta tdi.

I know a little while back my 2006 was worth more then what I originaly paid for it at the dealership. That was until I pulled out in front of someone and got t-boned. But diesels do hold their value quite well.

2nd on TDIclub. Biggest issue is making sure it has had its timing belt replaced on schedule. The OEM one would be good for 60k miles, but you can get a replacement belt and tensioner set which is good for 100k. I love my Y2k TDI. My only gripe is an overly-sensitive glow plug open-circuit detection, which frequently reads a false failure and turns on the CEL. Even if it does not see another failure, the CEL stays on until you reset it through the OBDII port.

One more thing - if you turn your own wrenches and can follow directions, you can rent the specialty tools and do your timing belt yourself. The TDIclub forum is full of people who swear that you need a "guru" to do it, but there are some pretty good instructions posted on that forum. I did mine several weeks back. Also put in a clutch, which was a bit more involved (and not as many forum posts explaining it). On a stocker, the clutch should still have plenty of life at 92k, as should the factory brakes.

just buy a haynes manual and it explains the timing belt in detail. not that hard. I second the CEL for the glow plug thing. other than that good car. The price might be a little high because of the mileage it gets and that is a premium nowadays.

The timing belt job is an hour job at the dealer and they were going to charged me $500 but I do it in 1 hour in my garage for less then $100 in parts if you change the Idler. I have never changed an Idler yet, on all my VW's. But I had to replace the Idlers on my Mazda, one Idler failed before the Belt did. But that could be because the Mazda had 300K miles on the engine and prior belt changes without the idlers changed.

EGT Gauge, and E-Con programmer by Hypertech. Use a ScanGaugeII to Check/Improve my MPG. Mileage now is 20MPG Highway and 12MPG Towing. Pull a 38ft 15500Lbs 5th Wheel Camper Trailer

After working in a VW shop for some time. Make sure when you do your timming belt to change the idler and all the pullies in their while you are at it . You can buy the whole kit for not much more than the timming belt itself. out of all teh timming belt jobs we did both blowen belts and just normal maint. It was never the belt that failed it was always a pully that went bad and took out the beld. Even on the ones where it was just time to change the belt their was always a pully thata you could feel the brearings going into it. On the pre 2005 cars we would also recommend to change the water pump as well... It was only a $75 part and no extra labour while we were in their.
