1982 Datsun 720 Diesel white smokes

Just bought a 1982 Datsun 720 with the SD22 diesel engine. It had been sitting a while and I finally got it to crank up and run. The truck surges at idle and white smokes out of the tail pipe. I checked for bad headgasket, but I don't think it is that because there is no water in the oil and vise-versa and the exhaust smells like diesel fuel. I did an air in fuel test from the injection pump mounted lift pump to the filter and there was no air leak. Right after the glow plugs cycle, it starts right up, but the only issue is that it is blows white smoke out the tailpipe. Any help is aprreciated, thanks.

I sure do appreciate all the responses to my post. Thinking that somebody would know a little bit about these SD22 engines and how to diagnose them. Turns out it was a combination of the fuel filter and an injector. I guess you can't get a good response if you don't have a German-made diesel vehicle.

"White" smoke

From your post, it appears that the "white" smoke may just be unburned fuel. I am assuming it does this when you first start it. If the smoke disappears or is greatly reduced after the engine warms to operating temps, you do not have a problem. This is normal for non-computer-controlled diesels. My Mercedes does the same thing when I first start it cold.

You also might want to check out the intake system; be sure the air filter is new, check all the pipes from the intake to the filter - sometimes critters build nests in the pipes. A good supply of clean air to the engine is essential.

As far as the surging goes, that also may be a function of a cold engine. It should smooth out as the engine warms. You might also check the glow plug system to be sure all GP's are working properly. This would aid in smoke reduction as well as the "stumbling/surging" at cold startup.

At that age, I'd say you probably would do well to replace the injectors or nozzles (if that's an option). Sounds like poor atomization.
