Might Buy a 1973 220D

Can anyone tell me anything about this car? It is a 220D Automatic Sedan. I'm sure it has quite a bit of mileage on it, but looks to be in good physical condition and is said to run fine. Are there points to look at on this car that I should be checking other than fluid qualities and functionality? Also, what kind of power and fuel mileage should be expected from it?

Thanks in advance for any help. I know Fords, just looking for a beater to get back and forth to work in.

I had a 72' 220D, got 42 mpg on highway. Motor mounts and AC systems were problematic.

Project car now is a very beat 76' 240D.
Project boat now is a 76' Thompson Trawler 44.

Good Luck

I hear you have to disassemble the entire car to change the blower motor and heater cores. That sounds like something to definitely look out for.

Best car I ever drove was a '78 240D stick, it ran AWESOME.

Had the dealer been reasonable with the price, I'd own it now. I have owned three MB diesels (300SD, 240D and a 190D), all were good cars.

The car pictured is worth about $1500 if it runs well, less if it has mechanical issues.

I Support: Trailer brakes an every axle over the towing vehicle's GVW; CDLs for RVers; Safety inspections for ALL vehicles and 6 axle trucks (97K GVW proposal).

The car runs, and the auto trans shifts fine once it's warmed up. All of the windows work, heater works, brakes work, etc....

The owner is asking $695.

That's a fair price then.

If you can afford it,then snap it up.I have seen those cars in Africa and the Middleast with 400K plus on them.Alot of the older Diesel Mercedes are bought in Europe and shipped to the Dark Continent.

Wish I could have one,but I have run out of room to park.

Need bigger property.

Old thread, but I went and looked at a similar MB Diesel with all this panic about fuel prices about to skyrocket.
I just could not get over how slow it was; if you can live with that they're good cars.
