need help with old 4 cylinder diesel

so me and a buddy took a independant study class. we decided we would get an old diesel engine running that we had laying around our school shop. if we can get it going we may convert it for biodiesel. the motor is on a stand right now, it has everything it needs to run ( the shop teacher used to teach a class where he would show how a diesel engine works and he had the engine running, so we know it runs its just been sitting for about 10 years). we found a plate with what looks like the manufacturer specs and stuff on it but it was in a different language, so this tells me it must be a foreign diesel engine. i was wondering if this engine should have glow plugs? and what should we do to get this thing going? i can supply more information if needed i will also try to get some pics of it.

Nick

It looks like a Russian copy of an old Deutz. To kill it, cut fuel or air. Air would be easier with just a slide in the intake tube running off the front of the motor.

It does not appear to have glow plugs.

okay thanks. also how would i prime this engine, there is no fuel in it so i know i will have to fill up the fuel filter with diesel but i am not sure where the filter is.. there are 2 containers that the fuel line runs through before getting to the injectors but there was no filter in either containers, does this mean this motor just doent use a filter? i thought maybe someone just took the filter out but it dosnt even look like a filter is supposed to be in them?

That looks like a priming pump on the back of the injection pump. The little WIF housing on the back of the filter block seems pretty simple. If that's not a priming pump on the injection pump I would be surprised.

Does the fuel return line on the back of the block go to anything? I see the rubber hose sitting there. Is that the fuel supply line? I can't tell from the pic but the return line may go back into the filter block.
