Oil Study....Good Read

I number of "tests" have been thrown around as of late claiming un-biased "facts" on oil. The problem I have with these tests is every one is paid for by an oil company, the same one that then uses that informaton to market themselves. Each time I raise this concern I seem to be blown off like it doesnt matter who paid for it. Well not only can data be bent, and information be presented in a misleading manor, it can also be "massaged" to a particular companies liking. The funny thing is, when I ask for a non-biased third party test, not one company can provide one. So, I found one on my own and wanted to share this information. As with anything else, take it for what is worth, and the final decision on what to do is yours, but it is a good read.

Attached is is a group of four research studies the North Carolina State University did on a number of different oils preformed on vehicles owned by Coca-Cola, the state police, and different city vehicles. The study compares Kendall, Shell/Rotella, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Havoline, and a few others on the subjects of emissions, fuel economy etc... and also includes chemical analysis and comparison of each. No one oil came out as the ultimate winner, but a select few definately kicked butt.

Good point! I have a question, look at this excerpt below from this study. Why is the ONLY oil company employee there from Royal Purple Oil Company?

>"Tests recommended by the EPA were conducted by Perkin Elmer Automotive Research, 5404 Bandera Rd., San Antonio,Texas. EPA 75 (city) and HFET (highway fuel economy test) were performed using two vehicles provided by the Texas Highway Patrol. Royal Purple 5w-30 motor oil and Havoline 10w-30 motor oil were tested in the vehicles. The tests were witnessed by Mr. Ronald Faison of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Mr. Tom Herrmann of the Royal Purple Oil Company, and Dr. J.W. Leach of North Carolina State University. Mr. Jerry Newbury, Manager of Fleet Operations, Texas Department of Public Safety, provided the two 4.6 liter Ford Crown Victoria Highway Patrol cars for the tests. The vehicles are year 2,000 models, each with about 30,000 miles of wear."<

This kind of dovetails with the one and only oil company employee being present. Doing a PDF text search word count in the linked PDF file I find:

Royal Purple mentioned 68 times. Shell mentioned 47 times and Amsoil mentioned 24 times.

Not trying to discount the whole report but just have a few questions with this study I find unusual.

My only problem with those is one what Lowboy said and two they are tesing RP synthetic against dino oils so of course most all the tests will show great results and improvment over the dino oils in the vehicles tested. There was one test that was against another synthetic and the two syns were the best two in that test.

Syn to dino isn't apples to apples in my opinion. But the good news is people can see that synthetics holds tested benefits over dino oils.

I honestly have no idea why they had a RP rep there. Maybe as a cunsultant? or just a witness? Sometimes institutes will hire employees of oil companies because of there expertese in a specific field, but I really dont know.

If you look on page 8 (at least in my adobe reader its page 8) there is a little blerb about the Royal Purple they used in some tests being a Synthetic blend. I believe they used RP Synthetic against the other Snythetic brands, and RP blend against the dinos. While it is not a true Apples to Apples test, it is very close, and as stated before, no one oil company paid for the test, so I believe it is truely un-biased. Also, no one oil dominated. Each one won tests in different areas.

I think you should know you are the one posting the tests.
Making claims that Amsoil is not a oil you would use ( in other post).
How do we know you don't work for the big oil Co.
If that is not a biased remark I don't know what is.
This is my views IMO.

Ok, now that I have that out of my system, let me explain why I am laughing.

Quote:

Firstly, I posted it, I did not conduct it. I did the same thing you have done countless times.

Wait, does this mean that you know everything about those "tests" and "comparisons" you post? If I remember correctly you "knew" Amsoil was API certified yet couldn't prove it AND another forum member found the information for you. POT KETTLE BLACK You get the idea.....

Does it upset you that much that I made that thread?

Since you brought another pointless thing up, (which I have noticed is another habit of yours when you cant prove a point) What of it if I did? Does that mean we shouldnt listen to you because you work for an oil company?

Quote:

Your accusing me of making a biased comment? Thats rich! You have interjected in countless threads claiming Amsoil is "the best" (your word, see other thread) and its a problem if anyone else is biased?

And these are mine!

Edit; I dont actually work for an oil company, I was trying to make a point.
