Diesel truck: Which one to choose? need guidance

It is time to get a used diesel truck, crew cab, 4x4, short bed, based on my finances: it will have around 70K miles and be 99-2003.
I will be using it for the following:
Towing an 24' enclosed car trailer couple times a month & other toys (no more than 6,000lb) & drive around town once in a while, no off roading, more of a highway cruiser, so I am looking for comfort.
Here is where I am at after researching & test driving, but I need answers from owners rather than salesmen...!

Ford: 7.3L: like them but tranny will go at some times
6.0L: heard horror stories about the motor: so I guess i'll stay away from them
Bottom line: 7.3L only, expect to change tranny, nice interior, overall size: big for the city.

Dodge: 5.9L: test drove the HO: impressive, but can not get a straight answer: is the HO only available in 06 & up? in 05: HO standard? prior years?
Tranny: How good is it? is it like Ford where I can expect to have to replace it at some point?
Bottom line: Great engine, interior is a bit cheap looking, great size & turning radius for the city. Tranny unknown, if HO only avail. in 05 & 06: then they are pricey.

Chevy/GMC: Don't know much about them except the tranny is an allisson: wont need to be rebuilt like Ford's & Dodge's?
feedback?
Any help & comment welcome, thanks

cummins has a lot of low end torque but the dmax has a flatter torque band, dmax has a higher torque than the cummins though. I'd say go for the dmax if u can find one, make sure to change the fuel filter often, the fuel rails might go out on you like my neighbor but that is probably a freak event.

i wish the 6.0 rep wasn't so tainted. mine has been amazing. i'd never, ever, ever wish to pull w/ my previous 7.3 compared to my current truck. the smooth power and tranny are absolutely incredible. [i've driven (but not towed w/) the dmax/allison and i truly think the torqueshift is on par. the ally gets more credit than the TS does. and i'd drive a stick before i'd ever drive a 4r100.]

BUT, i understand how tarnished the rep is and that many believe that all 6.0s are lemons. i personnaly believe that the early build '03s were the best and most reliable 6.0s. if you found one and were interested, an oasis printout is a must. and usually from that you should be able to tell if it's a lemon or not.

for the model years you're looking at, the ford CC probably wins hands down over the other two. i'd hate to see you limit yourself to (now grossly overpriced) 7.3s. you'd probably be two-thirds of the way to the price of a new truck if you tried to buy an '03 7.3 w/ less than 100k.

i'd say don't rule out the 6.0, but i know i'm the lone gunman here on that one. best of luck any way you chose.

flamesuit on!! :sofa

Have a friend with a '01 HO. His is 6spd. You are looking for auto. I'm not the one to say if they came with auto or not. Surf the Dodge forums. I have read threads on the autos being built up and there are some good guys there to answer some questions for you.

the HO was offered in 2001 with 245 hp but it is a manual.
this was unchanged until '03.5 (built after jan 1 2003) that is when Dodge offered the 305 hp. HO auto combo in addition to the 235(cali) or 250 hp. SO engines.
after '04.5 (after jan 1'2004) All were 325 hp. HO's and the SO was discontinued

^^^bingo, and as for the tranny, bad news, dodge's are bad, but IMO the cummins starts pulling lower than the d-max and when it gets bogged it keeps pulling as oppsed to needing to be slipped to gain rpm's and thus, power, honestly, you get a dodge for the cummins, a ford for the truck and the chevy for a cadillac ride
