The "New Diesel Emissions" prevent the use of a "Jacobs" (jake brake)

The "New Diesel Emissions" prevent the use of a "Jacobs" (jake brake) type exhaust brake due to the addition of the Diesel Particulate Filter, exhaust regeneration is based on exhaust backpressure by the percentage of blockage in the exhaust. Since we are no longer able to "block" the exhaust we have be forced (Federal and CA emission laws) to incorporate the exhaust brake into the variable vane turbocharger. What this does is "closes the vanes" to create exhaust back pressure before entering the exhaust.

This new technology is not nearly as effective as the past generation exhaust brake and you do not get the "exhaust back down" effect we were used to. No Back down Noise and about 40% effective braking as the old systems.

This has been adapted across the board now by all engine OEM's to become emission compliant.

Just FYI, randy

excuse me !?!

if REDUCING the exhaust flow via the turbine wheel works why not
use an exhaust BRAKE ??

both reduce exhaust flow & WONT create exhaust PRESSURE at the
monitoring points if done UPSTREAM early enough.

One side effect is that the ISC got a real Jacobs compression brake which works better at 1600 RPM than the old exhaust brake did at 2400. That's good in my book.
