Smoke switch??

hey guys,
so my buddy has an 05 6.0L f250 and a while back he put a smoke switch on it and it seemed like right after he did this the truck started to break down.
he has gone through a few sets of injectors. is this because the smoke switch or just because of how he drives?
he drives with a lead foot and he has a tuner on it and drives around on race tune all the time. i personally think the tuner is the problem but here is my real question.
are smoke switches bad for the engine? doesnt it just shut off the turbo?
any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
erik

smoke switch is not good to use all the time bc its making a really dirty combustion and getting sucked back threw the EGR and and could be plugging injectors.

Also if he's driving with a lead foot, His fuel pressure coming from the HFCM could be dropping below 40 psi. This is not good, it will destroy injectors without the proper fuel pressure at WOT. Do him a favor and convince him to join this site and start reading up, and ask alot of questions on what's best for his truck. As you alraedy know, thier is alot of members on here with alot of know how.

ya there are for sure. i LOVE this site. it helps sooo much.
heres a question for ya pooh. if i were to buy a 3500 ram w/ 6 speed manual. would you advise against a smoke switch or not?
although i think if i put a tuner and injectors in and drop that trans into 5th or 6th it would probably dump more than enough smoke? idk
thanks
erik

As far as I know the smoke switch only works with the VGT turbo. This stops the vanes in the turbo from working. With the switch off the turbo and fuel ratio do not match untill the turbo has a chance to spool up. Here is a generic example of VGT= Turn on a garden hose, and it comes out at 40 psi, just kinda comes out at about a foot or two.Now take your thumb and place it on the end of the hose and the water has more psi and will go 10+ feet. Your thumb is acting the same as the vanes in a VGT. The vanes redirect exhaust flow to the turbine wheel based on input from pcm and other sensors.

IMO, the smoke switch is all for show. people who dump out smoke just give activist more fire power for the goverment to come down harded on the diesel community. Also it loads up soot in the turbo causing the vanes to stick.

ya. i was just curious. you have just basically answered my question pooh. i wanted to know the side effects of a switch and i kinda figured it would plug the turbo up but i wasnt sure. im just gonna buy a 6 speed manual so i can lug the crap outta the motor and get smoke, if i want to. i really dont like smoke. its kind of annoying.
thanks for the help

smoke switch is possible on the Cummins, and works very well with the 6-speed manual
