Towing with Spartan 210TP and 250 and trying to understand how they work.

I understand that the 210 Tow Performance has built-in safeties for towing, but my experience has been that while the 250 may run a little more Fuel Rail Pressure, it doesn't require as much Turbo Boost to get the job done. Everthing else is virtually "equal" except that the 250 gets much better fuel mileage.

I've been towing my 8,000# fifth wheel with the Spartan 210TP and 250 on some flat-lands and in the mountains. Here is some of my data:

Outside temperatures from 100 to 105 degrees

210TP mileage = 8 mpg
250 = 11.5 mpg

210 oil temp = 212 degrees
250 = 210 degrees

210 max. boost = 33 psi
250 max. boost = 29 psi

210 fuel rail pressure = 12,000 max.
250 fuel rail pressuer = 13,500 max.

Transmission & coolant temperatures virtually the same.

Do these numbers look good?

If so, what are the built-in safeties for the Tow Tunes?

Not messing up your thread, but i towed 14k today, total weight 22,800 with the 210 tow tune and my temps at 98* were 210oil and 200 coolant, I had a very harsh downshift at 40mph, it was bad and more than once. Not to mention the damn 45 mph lock up, it SUCKS so bad, I hate it with a passion, I love my truck but the tunes now are ****. The power is fine that's not the issue with me it's the shifting and the early lock up I and my truck hate it badly, I wish Spartan would address this issue, they do not compare to a tuned 6.0l at all, they have more power but no where as smooth, not in the same ballpark. For months now they have been coming out with a fix........I check everyday hoping for a better tune but still nothing.

Your one of very few guys that don't like the 45 MPH lock-up. Most love it. With big tires, it's not going to be ideal because your RPM's are already lower than most at higher speeds. When you add in an early lock-up, the RPM's are really going to drop. I have 34" tires and it works great. It worked great on my truck with 35" tires. A fix will come for it. We have one guy tuning these trucks. He has both 6.4's and 6.7's on his plate now. We have a very large customer base. Getting things perfect on 2 different platforms at the same time is going to take time. Simple as that.

And to compare 6.0 tuning to 6.4 tuning is a little off the wall. If you ran a 210 horsepower tow tune on a 6.0, the truck wouldn't last too many miles down the road. Compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. Run a 125 or 150 tune on your truck. It will shift just a smooth as a tuned 6.0. I actually rode in a buddies 6.0 with Innovative's xtreme race tune. It had very positive and firm shifts....very similar to a tuned 6.4.

I am not sure what the harsh downshift is that you are experiencing. It could be the converter un-locking and then locking back up, or just un-locking. Are you using tow/haul when this happens, or no?

I have a 09 with 3.55 gears and 35" tires. I LOVE the 45mph lock-up, it's the reason I would never tow with lower than the 210tp tune before the updated tunes came out. My only issue now(everyone has at least one!) is that with my suncoast the shifts are a bit to firm, but there's a fix coming out soon... hoping by Wednesday!!

Yes it downshifts hard with the tow/haul on, it did it today I just took it out of tow haul all together. My truck bogs down bad with the early lock up, I understand some like it but not me at all, it needs to be at least 10mph higher I think, normal hiway driving I would say is an average of 60mph and up so 55-56mph would be ideal I would think, not 100% sure what the optimal speed should be, but it's not 45mph for me.

The update will be 50 MPH. Maybe custom tuning will be something you will go after when River City Diesel begins tuning with the DashDAQ in a few months. I am sure Josh can write you a few files with the late lock-up you are looking for.
