2006 DODGE 2500 Small stock tire issue

Well the problem is the small tires on the 2006 2500 4x4 Dodge Ram. I have a 2006 dodge 2500 4x4 with 265 70 17. These tires look crazy small. What is the largest tire I can put on this truck without changing the rim or putting a lift kit on it? Iam sure this is a common question. I have been to tire stores and some say 285 safelty and some say you are stuck with the size you have because the rim is not as wide as the 2005 17" rim. What do you guys think of this? I want the truck stock. I just hate on the fender well that I see. I just want a little more meat underneath to cover up that space b/c I looking for a mudder tire and I don't want a "small mudder".
