Truck tarping systems

Has anyone ever built a manual tarping system for your dumptruck? I have a 14' dump trailer that I use for hauling trash a lot. I have just built some taller removable sideboards for it, and now it is really too tall to easily throw on a tarp by hand. A rolling system seems like it would be difficult to use because I would have to remove it an reinstall whenever I change sideboards. So I guess the kind that pivot in the middle would be easier because I could leave everything attached and just make the arms adjustable to compensate for the height of the sideboards.

Any suggestions or plans out there?

Put a bend in the arms of a center pivot furling tarp so the sides are open with the tarp furled into a headache rack. The arms can have a flex to make the bend and then clear if you load high.

The arms are a real pain if you want to load pallets over the side - while you are at it add anchors for load straps.

I have one of these by itself on my single axle dump truck and it works pretty well and seems to be well constructed for what it cost. I don't have any arms on it. There is a pocket on the back edge of the tarp that I just stuck a treated 2x2 in to keep it straight and I bungy it over the top edge of the tailgate and crank it up tight. I've seen a guy local with a dump trailer that looked like it had the same kit I have and he fabbed up some 1.5" square stock and made arms and a crosspiece to go thru the tarp pocket and had it spring loaded. Just unlatch and let the tarp out with the crank, then crank it back up against spring pressure on the arms. Works just like the electric ones on big trucks only you have to be the motor - but it costs alot less, lol. I liked his setup and might do the same on mine someday. Hope this helps...

Thanks, I will look into this. It does seem affordable. The only problem I see for me is that the trailer is used by itself, with 2' sideboards, and with 4' sideboards.

I made my own system yesterday and used it today. It works pretty good I think, considering what I have in it. It is a center pivot type. I made the frame out of electrical conduit and use ropes to open/close it and to secure it. I have a few more little things I would like to add, once I use it a few more times and see how it works.

I also have a 14 ft PJ dump trailer with extended sides, and with the fuel prices I am seriously thinking about a tarp I can pull over. My trailer is covered in snow right now but a rope tied to each side and spliced into the middle to pull it open and closed I have already figured. Being retired, and a hundred kilometers from my steel supplier, It may have to wait a while. One more project in a long list, it has to be easily removable. Wonder if plastic pipe would work, no rust minimal weight, cheap, and close.

That's pretty much what I did with mine using ropes and a cleat on both ends to secure the rope to. In terms of plastic pipe, I don't know. I would be worried about how brittle it can get as it gets colder and if it would break under any shock load.

I measured it out today 8ft 2inches to the bottom of the box that comes to the top of the extenders at the back and on top of the goose neck far enough to be able to tie it securely to the cross braces. If I use 1.5 inch schedule 40 pipe and threaded ends of steel pipe I can form the ends, flat on one side, I can make a pivot that way, say 1/2 inch pin on a piece of channel iron, welded to the box, or even bolted on 2 inch square tubing cut at a 45. Doing steel is always an option, as is getting nylon pipe.
The tarp length would have to wait till I load my loader, and do some testing.
I am retired so when it is real cold, I just watch work!
