Motor Advice

I have a 450B John Deere Crawler Loader, that I threw a rod. My dad and I are searching for a new motor for the machine. I am voting for a remanufactored engine, my dad is not sure what he wants to do. He is thinking about buying a used engine. What are yalls opinion?

Its all about risk vs realibility. Some questions to be asked:

How many hours per year is it used?
How hard is it worked?
Is it a critical piece of equipment?
Is having a warrantee important?
Do you know the history and maintaince of the used engine, is it from a trustworthy source?
How much "life" is left in the rest of the machine?
etc., etc.....

I have rebuilt JD engines just enough so they sound/run good just to sell or trade in the equipment and have purchased reman. engines.

IF it were mine, I would look at a reman JD engine. This way it will fit it, it will work. There will be no guessing at making a conversion.

Looking it up online, Deere wants ~$900 just for a basic overhaul kit. Reman will probably be in the $5-9k range.

What you want to do is look at the core and see what you have for a core. I take it you have no crank, no block, and did the piston hit the head. You really want to ask because a lot of re mans without a core is more expensive than a new one. Ask the questions first, and then you will know.
I have never been a fan of buying used, you never know was it overheated was the oil changed, regularly?

Well I talked to a local machine broker and pretty much our plan is to part out this machine and use that money towards a better machine. The loader we have now is nothing but a pile and not suited for what we need it for. We are going to be better off parting out this machine and buying something more reliable and more suited to our needs. I thank you all for your advice.
